Tapered roller bearings are designed so that the imagined conical apices formed by the raceways of the inner and outer rings and the rollers all converge at one point on the bearing axis. The trapezoidal tapered rollers used as the rolling elements are guided by a large rib on the inner ring. These bearings can take radial loads and axial loads in one direction. When load is applied, the axial component generated inside the bearing generally requires the use of two opposed bearings (similar to angular contact ball bearings) or double-row bearings. Spacers are used to adjust the inner and outer rings in the axial direction to achieve the proper internal clearance. Since they are separable, the inner ring (cone) assemblies and outer rings (cups) can be mounted independently.
Tapered roller bearings are separable radial bearings. They consist of the inner ring with roller set and cage assembly, (cone) and a loose outer ring (cup).
Tapered roller bearings are suitable for both radial and thrust forces but also accept combined loads and tilting moments. Tapered roller bearings transfer the loads acting on the bearing at a certain angle, the so called “contact angle α” towards the shafts centre line.
Tapered roller bearings have tapered inner and outer ring raceways as well as tapered rollers. They are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads The projection lines of the raceways meet at a common point on the bearing axis to provide a true rolling action and therefore low frictional moments during operation. The axial load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with increasing contact angle.
As single row tapered roller bearings are only able to accept thrust loads in one direction they must always be used in pairs where one bearing is adjusted against another one which guides the shaft in the opposite direction.
